On the occasion of October10,  Against the Death Penalty, international day, Iranian Human Rights Activist Groups in EU and North America (member of the world coalition against the death penalty), bring their annual report on the situation of  death penalty and widespread, planned and systematic violation of Human Right in Iran to the public notice. This report covers the period between October 2006 and September 2007 and contains the names of the people who have either been executed or have death penalty sentences.

Information gathered in this report is essentially extracted from the news agencies, news papers and predictive sites, publishing inside the state and also some exterior sources.

Due to the censorship in Iran, the restrictions set against the information- gathering of NGO s, this report reflects a part of execution sentences issued in Iran.  

Our report contains two categories as follow:

 People, who have already been executed, (list number 1):

•       Totally 265 were executed in the mentioned period. The number of executions has increased by 140 % as compared with the same period last year.

•       3 of them were woman.

•       34 were political prisoners. This number had increased 6 times more than last year.

•       100 were executed in public. The number is twice as much as last year.

•       1 was condemned to be stoned to death in public.

•       Only in 77 cases, the information on the age of the executed persons was available. Among them, 47 people were under 30, 30 were over 30, and the oldest person executed had 65 years old.

•       The information regarding the identity of 57 people remains incomplete.

People who are awaiting execution, (list number 2):

•       In our mentioned period, 218 execution sentences were issued. Also according to the gathered information, 39 execution sentences issued from previous years were confirmed for this year, in revision courts. (These peoples ‘names are not available in this list).

•       Issuing death penalty sentences had increased 60% as compared with last year.

•       11 were sentenced to be stoned to death.

•       5 are political prisoners.

•       Among 98 cases, that the information on their ages was available, 4 are under the age of 18, 63 are between the ages of 18 and 30, and 31 are over the age of 30.

•       7 people were under the age of 18 by the time were accused  of a crime;

•       For 76 people, the information is incomplete.

Who are we?

IHRAG (Iranian Human Rights Activist Groups in EU and North America) is a network of non-profit organizations formed in the fall of 2001 by the independent Iranian associations based in Europe and North America.

IHRAG activities are primarily based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as UN’s Human rights conventions.

The central objectives of IHRG are:

•       To contribute to the defense, protection and promotion of the basic principles of human rights as described in the United Nations’ "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" as well as in the UN’s Human rights conventions;

•       To facilitate and encourage cooperation, communication and solidarity between Iranian Human Rights groups worldwide in order to coordinate their activities;

•       To facilitate and encourage cooperation, communication and solidarity between Iranian and international Human Rights activists;

•       To inform Iranian citizens about their Human Rights and to assist them in coordinating their efforts to defend their civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, which are defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and UN’s Human Rights conventions;

•       To abolish the death penalty

•       To incessantly monitor violations of Human Rights in Iran;

•       To diffuse information concerning these aforementioned violations to the international public opinion.
